Harper to Promote Economic Justice and Equal Opportunities in New Committee Chair

01/22/2019

State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago, will continue her fight for middle-class and struggling families as the chair of the newly established House Economic Opportunity & Equity Committee, positioning Harper to be a strong voice in the fight for a living wage, equal pay and access to affordable health care.

“There is a lot of work to do in order to create a progressive, fair and equal Illinois that does not pit people against each other, but lifts them up,” said Harper. “That means a living wage of $15 an hour, equal pay for women and people of color, affordable and accessible health care for all, and finally forcing the ultra-rich to pay their fair share in taxes.”

Harper was recently named to serve as the chair of the new House Economic Opportunity & Equity Committee for the 101st General Assembly. In her efforts to make Illinois a just state for families, Harper will fight for policies that put more money in the pockets of hardworking men and women, equal pay for women of color, affordable health care coverage and fighting for a progressive and fairer tax structure.

“Illinois has the opportunity to make things right for its hardworking families,” said Harper. “I look forward to facing the challenges ahead with my colleagues as we move beyond the failures of the past and build a state and communities that truly work for everyone.”
